Equal Opportunities è una video-performance che esplora il concetto di uguaglianza attraverso un gesto semplice e simbolico: l’esecuzione di azioni quotidiane, che richiederebbero l’uso di due mani, con una sola mano. Questo atto, apparentemente banale, diventa un potente simbolo di resistenza e ironia, mettendo in luce come l’uguaglianza sia spesso un’ideologia utopica, un’aspirazione più che una realtà tangibile. Non siamo nati con le stesse opportunità, né viviamo in un contesto sociale che le garantisce, eppure l’aspettativa è sempre quella dell’eccellenza. Non basta “funzionare”, bisogna “performare”, superando ostacoli che per molti sono invisibili, ma per altri costituiscono barriere insormontabili. Il lavoro nasce da un’esperienza personale, radicata nella mia condizione di migrante in Italia, dove l’essere “altro” si traduce in una serie di sfide che partono dalle azioni più semplici, come la comunicazione verbale, per estendersi ai meccanismi più complessi della società, come il sistema burocratico o le dinamiche culturali. Questa condizione di “limite” diventa un punto di partenza per riflettere su come le disuguaglianze strutturali siano spesso normalizzate, quasi invisibili, eppure profondamente presenti nella vita di chi le subisce. La performance si svolge in uno spazio candido, asettico, che amplifica l’attenzione sui movimenti coordinati e sulla loro apparente disinvoltura. Questo contrasto tra l’ambiente neutro e la difficoltà intrinseca delle azioni eseguite crea una tensione visiva che invita lo spettatore a interrogarsi sulla natura delle opportunità e sulle condizioni che le rendono possibili. L’ironia sottile che permea il gesto artistico non è solo una critica sociale, ma anche un invito a riconoscere la fragilità e la resilienza insite in ogni tentativo di adattamento. Equal Opportunities, cerca di trasformare l’esperienza del limite in un atto di liberazione, mostrando come la fragilità possa diventare una forza e come l’imperfezione possa essere un punto di partenza per una nuova forma di resistenza. Il video diventa così un’allegoria della condizione umana, in cui l’aspirazione all’uguaglianza si scontra con la realtà delle disuguaglianze.

Equal Opportunities is a video performance that explores the concept of equality through a simple yet symbolic gesture: performing everyday actions—normally requiring the use of two hands—with only one hand. This seemingly mundane act becomes a powerful symbol of resistance and irony, highlighting how equality is often a utopian ideology, more an aspiration than a tangible reality. We are not born with the same opportunities, nor do we live in a social context that guarantees them, and yet the expectation is always one of excellence. It is not enough to merely “function”—one must “perform,” overcoming obstacles that are invisible to many but insurmountable to others. The work stems from a personal experience, rooted in my condition as a migrant in Italy, where being “other” translates into a series of challenges—beginning with the simplest actions, such as verbal communication, and extending to the more complex mechanisms of society, such as the bureaucratic system or cultural dynamics. This condition of “limitation” becomes a starting point for reflecting on how structural inequalities are often normalized, almost invisible, and yet deeply present in the lives of those who endure them. The performance unfolds in a pristine, aseptic space that heightens the viewer’s focus on the coordinated movements and their apparent ease. This contrast between the neutral environment and the inherent difficulty of the actions performed creates a visual tension, prompting the audience to question the very nature of opportunity and the conditions that make it possible. The subtle irony running through the artistic gesture is not only a form of social critique but also an invitation to acknowledge the fragility and resilience embedded in every attempt at adaptation. Equal Opportunities seeks to transform the experience of limitation into an act of liberation, showing how fragility can become a source of strength and how imperfection can serve as a starting point for a new form of resistance. The video thus becomes an allegory of the human condition, in which the aspiration to equality collides with the reality of inequality.
