È il 23 settembre 2020 e la voce di Alireza Bagherzadeh attraversa i pyxel sgranati di uno schermo, intonando il motivetto “Bim bada bum bam”, che apre “Ashyaneh”, nota canzone popolare iraniana, che da sempre accompagna le occasioni speciali in casa Bagherzadeh. È il sessantesimo compleanno del padre di Andisheh, ma lui è costretto a seguire i festeggiamenti a distanza, in attesa del rinnovo del permesso di soggiorno, senza il quale gli è negato viaggiare all’estero nei pochi mesi di tregua tra un’ondata di Covid e l’altra. L’artista registra questo momento intimo, dove gioia e tristezza si fondono negli sguardi della sua famiglia e nel proprio. Così uno spaccato di vita personale si tramuta in riflessione collettiva, perché a pesare non è solo la distanza, la scelta del distacco dalle proprie origini, ma anche la consapevolezza delle opportunità perse e dei diritti negati, in balia della burocrazia.

“It’s September 23, 2020, and the voice of Alireza Bagherzadeh resonates through the pixelated screen, singing the familiar tune ‘Bim bada bum bam,’ the opening of ‘Ashyaneh,’ a well-known Iranian folk song that has always accompanied special occasions in the Bagherzadeh household. It’s Andisheh’s father’s sixtieth birthday, but he is forced to join the celebrations from afar, awaiting the renewal of his residency permit, without which he is barred from traveling abroad in the few months of respite between waves of Covid. The artist captures this intimate moment where joy and sadness blend in the gazes of his family and in his own. Thus, a glimpse of personal life transforms into a collective reflection, for it’s not just the physical distance that weighs heavily, nor the choice of detachment from one’s origins, but also the awareness of missed opportunities and denied rights, caught in the grip of bureaucracy.”
