A flag is a drape of cloth used symbolically as a form of identification. This object is commonly utilized to represent a nation or in more generic terms, an organization; an object that provokes a feeling of patriotism, pride, and membership. To identify one’s self with a flag and with what it stands for is a common fact; but what if this object were to stop provoking these emotions and emitting these functions? What if all these feelings were to become synthetic? “Bathe” manifests this process in a video performance in which I myself begin washing my country’s flag in a whitening solution in order to remove its colors, the forms, and thus its meaning. My visual research concentrates on themes regarding identity; this is due to my personal experience. I had to move abroad at 16 due to difficult circumstances in my country and had to continue emigrating for the same reason until I reached Italy. During these years, I found myself ever more contaminated by my surrounding social and cultural influences until today where I no longer view my nationality as a concrete fact but as something malleable, interchangeable, and hybrid. The work seeks to represent not a renunciation of my origin but a rebirth, a sort of baptism that liberates a difficult inseparable bond, an act that does not create a new life but permits the possibility of being something diferent.

La bandiera viene universalmente impiegata per identificre una nazione o più
generalmente un’organizzazione, un colettivo. Questo stendardo suscita solitmente
orgoglio, un forte senso di patriottismo ed appartenenza, o almeno ‘‘dovrebbe’’.
E se questo sentimento comune venisse smascherato? Analizzando l’oggetto in
sè, ci si pone davanti un semplice pezzo di stoffa, eppure possiamo sentirci
trasportati da sensazioni di unione che rispecchiano una tendenza sotto sotto
non poi così naturale ed immediata. La mia ricerca si concentra su tematiche
riguardanti l’identità per via della mia esperienza di vita: spinto da difficoltà
sociali ho prima lasciato il mio paese d’origine a 16 anni, per poi spostarmi
continuativamente fino a stablirmi in Italia.Durante gli anni, perciò, mi sono
ritrovato sempre piú contaminato dalle culture che mi circondavano ed ora
vedo l’identita’ nazionale non piu’ come un dato di fatto ‘‘dovuto’’, ma come un
elemento modellabile, trasformabile ed ibrido. “Bathe” illustra un processo di regressione: sottoforma di performance-video io stesso lavo la bandiera del mio paese d’origine, l’Iran, in una soluzione sbiancante in modo da cancellarne i colori, le forme e di conseguenza il
significato. Il lavoro cerca di manifestare una rinascita, una sorta di battesimo che
libera un aggancio primitivo, non mirato ad un nuovo risultato ma alla ‘‘possibilità
d’altro’’.
