Comprehending the Concept of nationality is a process that requires first hand and personal experience. To fully understand the state of foreignness one must become a foreigner. A border is a line that cuts, supports and devices and based on one’s orientation to this line one finds himself with a different status. In this series I asked fifteen subjects (all of which are from different countries, yet reside in Italy) to repeat the phrase “Sono italiano” meaning “I am Italian” using only one breath repeating it until they needed to gasp for air, pushing them to their limits of tolerance.
Repeating the sentence, it begins to loose form and meaning and the natural and spontaneous act of breathing is disrupted becoming conscious and controlled, a process similar to drowning.
The choice of replicating a natural act is comparable with the concept of speaking a mother language or a foreign language, one is
done instinctively and the other is constructed.
This project is dedicated to the many lives lost at sea near the
Italian border of Lampedusa.

Comprendere il concetto di nazionalità è un processo che richiede esperienza. Nessun autoctono riesce difatti a capire o ad esprimere lo stato di forestiero finchè non fa esperienza del confine. Un confine è una linea: separa, divide, spezza, fino a frammentare lo spazio, ad ogni versante corrisponde uno status ben preciso dove identificarsi. Nel lavoro “Annegare” è stato chiesto ai partecipanti, residenti in Italia ma provenienti da diverse parti del mondo, di ripetere la frase “Sono italiano/a” più volte possibili nell’atto di un respiro, fino ad esaurimento dello stesso. La
frase, non solo esaurisce di significato ripetendosi, ma rende l’atto naturale del respiro cogitato: meccanico e cosciente. L’atteggiamento evocato rimanda all’atto dell’annegare: si perde la spontaneità in favore della sopravvivenza, così come nascere in un luogo rende l’appartenervi naturale, come respirare.
Quest’opera è dedicata alle numerose vite perse nelle acque vicino al confine di Lampedusa.
